Harperbury was built as a specialised Mental Health / Learning Disability hospital in the period between the first and second world wars, referred to at the time as either an ‘asylum’ or a ‘colony’. At it’s height the place had over 200 staff and over 1,500 patients, for a full historical account of the place please read the excellent History of Harperbury Hospital which goes into quite some depth. The site is quite large but despite those stats the site doesn’t feel like it has the scale of somewhere like Nocton Hospital, partly because many of the buildings are at least 2-storey and the buildings are also quite close together.

Visited with Natevansate & LiamCH, this is probably the one hospital/asylum that did nothing for me, worth seeing yes, but totally uninspiring...........on with the photos all taken on my Voigtlander Vitomatic II CS on Fuji Neopan 100.

funny how some places are like that yet others grab you by the face lol
i agree though a very nice set of images :)

Maybe the black and white pics help to add a bit of atmosphere because they look really good, nice work.

Thanks yes I agree there is something about B&W that only works with film...........you dont get the same feeling from converting a digital image IMO

I am amazed to see there is anything left. Shame you found it uninspiring, I can see why but for some reason enjoyed both of my visits. Did you....ahem....notice a 'strange' wheelbarrow by any chance?

Wheelbarrow swing, by any chance?

hey, do you have a map of the buildings or anything? been trying to find the swimming pool and padded cells! cant find them???

Bloody hell, how this place has changed,I can remember working at the hospital in the mid sixties,I was sent along to finish some second fixing,I went on my BSA Bantam with a few tools and was locked in a ward full of old women,I was 17 at the time, and it was one of the scariest jobs I ever did,it took me half an hour to do five hours work,I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

^lol - love it, a sparx i take it

No,I'm a chippy mate,I had to do my work and keep all my tools within a few inches of me,I found out afterwards that I should have had a member of staff with me at all times, all part of life's rich tapestry I suppose, coicidently,I have worked at all the other mental hospitals in the St Albans area in the late 60's and 70's,seen some pretty weird and creepy stuff, nuf said!

Such as Hill End and Cell barnes....?

Im from st. albans, never got the chance to get to these places before they closed. Can you shed any light as to what went on?

I agree with MADONNAchris, i have visited harperbury 5 times now, and cannot seem to find the padded cells or swimming pool,
It might have something to do with the fact that me and my friends have only been there in the dark
But im still keen to find out where they are!
And whats this about a wheelbarrow swing? I have seen one random swing outside one of the buildings?
To me this hospital is pretty addictive, we have experienced some creepy things in our investigations :)

The swimming pool is at the top of the site well away from the main hospital ward buildings...............you guys are just not looking hard emough

A number of blocks have now been demolished in preparation for redevelopment on the Meadow avenue/close part of the site - 5,6,7,9 and 10 were demolished over the summer. No.9 in particular had two padded rooms. All but two (nos.8 +14) of the remaining buildings are two storey blocks which were for less dependent patients which didn't require seclusion rooms and had dormitories instead. The school, activity centre and pool were located at 'The Common', at the south of the site and not accessible from Meadow avenue.
