I stalk the fringes of humanity and dwell amongst
These warehouses were once used for import and export of goods. For whatever reason, these old storage facilities now stand empty. There appeard to be tracks in one of the buildings and the disused carriages suggest that perhaps the railway networks once serviced this place. It was the morning after a night out and the person who would ordinarily accompany me needed to recover. :p For this reason, I went here to poke about alone after I was told about it. Whilst undertaking long treks, my hyper nature cannot cause head aches for hungover people.

I went round all of the buildings but one outbuilding had very little pigeon faeces, signs of people sleeping rough and a strange rhythmic scratching playing through the darkness. Could have just been vermin but something didn't feel right about it so I didn't follow the sound to its source.

Peaceful waters.

Newhaven Fort

used to play in the old fort in the late 60's, when it was a real ruin, goodness knows how we got in! - it's all been done up now, replete with cafeteria (boring)

There are still ferries running out of Newhaven, but as this was for containers, presumably this is some way away from the passenger terminal?

this is not a report ok

Is the ferry still running then? Gould alone only knows what will happen to Newhaven (town) if the ferry is pulled (jobs), the last time I visited Newhaven town it had been turned into a ghost-town pedestrian precinct aka muggers' paradise and was deserted, I didn't even recognise where I was apart from my map told me I was in Newhaven. I use to go sea-fishing off the coast + pier there, so ought to have remembered bits of the town from those happy carefree days, but the town is so altered it gave me cultural amnesia. Enterprising developers (aren't they wonderful people?) had started building modern flats almost onto the fort I seem to remember from my last visit, and some of these had plastic 'no go' tape tied around them, presuably because the chalk cliffs are unstable. I shudder to think what would have happened in the event of the fort being bombarded, mercifully a shot was never received or fired in anger I understand. Bits of the cliff / fort were collapsing even in my youth many years ago. Mention of a railway ... there were rails along the seafront between the cliffs and the pier, though I never saw any rail traffic going along them; there was also a 'Newhaven Museum' at this point which was always closed, a sort of corrugated iron affair.

Had a closer look at picture Halloweenandurbex337.jpg - the paperwork - that's a ledger of architects' drawings in respect of maintenance/rennovation of the west and east piers at Newhaven c.1918-1980. I have angled from both :) Presumably all these records were digitalised soon afterwards and the ledger became redundant? Beautiful handwriting, written by someone quite senior in years I should think.

Two interesting points to follow up here - the ferry is run by the French company LD Lines. Indeed I believe and you'll have to check this for certain, but what remains of the port is owned by a consortium of LD and the French government! Secondly, there was a very interesting article about Newhaven Fort and the underground tunnels beneath it in an issue of Subterranea earlier this year. Its not online, but if you would like to read Megalith, I can scan it for you or anyone else who would like it.

Ooh! Yes please!

I used to gaze into those yawning storage portals before they put the electrics back in, but it wasn't so much fun exploring them after that. But I'm pretty sure access to the whole fort underground was fairly restricted - you certainly couldn't get down to ground level where you could see doors and windows built into the foot of the cliff.

So Newhaven now owned by France! Eh well and nor even a Battle of Hastings in sight!

Wonder what they'll sell off next - Westminster et al, would do us all a favour! ;)

Thanks :)
