Now I'm sure this place needs no introduction, but here's a brief history anyway...

Kellingley Colliery is located near Knottingley, on the border of North Yorkshire. In 1960 work began in order to sink two shafts, eventually reaching a depth of around 800m. The colliery began producing coal in 1965, employing around 2000 workers. The colliery closed on 18th December 2015, after failed proposals to extend its life. Using the various coal seams available to it, the colliery could've continued producing coal until 2019.

Following the closure the shafts were capped, and demolition work started. Over a year after closure we thought we'd go and check it out after seeing the documentary on its closure recently. Going by the rate of demolition at Thoresby, I wasn't expecting quite so much of it to have gone yet.

The Explore
We approached from the rear, after initially being clocked by secca from a neighbouring site. She warned us of the dogs on site, and that we shouldn't go in, but could take photos from the canal side... yeah right ;) Initially the site seemed fairly quiet, so we headed for the nearest building that didn't look like it was going to fall down. This happened to be the coal prep/washing building. (I never knew they washed coal, but I do now)

We got wandering around for a bit and taking some photos...

In this photo you can really see how much of the site has been demolished so far. In previous reports this area is filled with conveyors and intermediate buildings, now its bare.

After heading back down to the ground floor we needed to get across to the headstocks and bath house. We timed our cross in between a dumper travelling from each end of the site, but we didn't count on secca driving around on patrol. Not knowing if he spotted us we headed back into the building we'd come from... a minute or so later it was clear he had... "woof woof woof"

So after about 15 minutes of going from side to side upstairs, wondering what we were going to do, whether we try and hide and wait it out, our make our escape, we decided to just give up. They had the building almost surrounded, secca one side with dog, a few workmen approaching from the front, and as we'd later find out, police on the other side.

Fortunately secca and the police turned out to be alright, and after some questions and checking us out over the radio we got a VIP taxi back to the car. Thankfully I had my fake gopro rolling and managed to get a few stills of the outside of the coal prep building, which is nothing short of a H&S nightmare.

You met some decent Secca and common sense plod all on one explore nosed around what looks like a nightmare of a site without getting hurt, I reckon you used up your luck for this year.

You made a sound job of the explore, great pics and interesting report, I enjoyed it, Thanks

The woman down the road didn't paint such a nice picture of the site security. I thought he was going to be a nightmare at first when shouting stuff like "come out or I'll send the dog in". When we eventually came out he quickly changed tone after realising who we were, and possibly seeing the camera on my head :D

I doubt the police in attendance would have been impressed either given that him setting the dogs on you would be criminally illegal.

I wasn't sure about the legality of dogs. I've heard dogs aren't allowed to be let roam free, but I'm not sure what exactly that is defined as. Whether it's for example dogs being left on their own in an enclosed compound, or if it extended to dogs running free from their handler while they were still present

Very nice! Spent many hours on this plant and other similar NCB facilities in my BRB days, trying to come up with ways to stop the washed coal freezing in the HAA hopper wagons during the winter cold spells. The coal produced by NCB's modern extraction methods produced a course, grit like product that could be fed directly to the CEGB boilers with no further particle size reduction. The only problem was it needed washing, to remove the very fine dust that would otherwise cause horrendous problems during 'free fall' loading and unloading procedures.

The mention of dogs is interesting - a near neighbour is a security guard with two lovely dogs. Well they always play nicely with my two cockers when we meet up! He patrols live sites that contain very valuable stock etc in bonded warehouses. The people who raid these places are nasty pieces of work, do not want to be caught and will always put up a fight, so inevitably the dogs patrol some of these sites off the lead sometimes. Basically to protect the well being of secca, and why not? A derelict plant or factory is a completely different kettle of fish, stolen scrap metal has an intrinsic value but is easily traceable, as one always knows the iffy scrap dealers in the area. So the barking dog on a leash is just as good an 'off put' to the petty thief or vandal sulking around a semi demolished factory as the free running one

Ace. Nice shots, some cool industry and a free taxi ride. Sounds like a win win.
