The History

The history has already been covered in the other report so I’ll quickly tell you that this is the power station for the complete site and at its time of use was gas fired and generating 753 MW. It opened in 2002 and run by Coryton Energy Co Ltd. Inside the site there were originally 5 turbines, all from various manufacturers although only 4 exist now

The Explore

We knew there was a power station on site and guessed it was located under the two white chimneys we could see slap bang in the middle. We made our way in that direction avoiding the beady eyes of secca who were driving all over the site. We walked into the bottom of the building and felt kinda let down until we climbed the stairs and found the turbines, crane and control room. The place was covered in bird poo but was great. We had a bit of a climb on the crane to get some pics, and then made our way to the substation.

As always please enjoy the pics

Although this is a large plant (in both output and physical size) in comparison to other 'private' generating stations, many of the larger factory/works complexes did have some form of 'off grid' generation, especially in the late 30's. early 50's. I assume that the continuous feed Laval centrifuge, shown in photograph 1, was there to clean up the hydraulic oils used to work process valves etc, by removing wear metal particles and entrained water. Laval are probably better known under their 'Alfa Laval' company trading name - where they supplied centrifuges to the milk and dairy product industries. The last brew clock board is nice - seen similar 'last operation memorials' in other plants and factories over the years and they were always associated with some process, machine or manufacturing line that had been running 'continuously' for years - until that final throw of the switch.

Nice set of images of an important piece of plant in the overall process carried out here.
