Hello there,

To start this will definitely not appeal to people looking for artistic flare as it was our first time ever urban exploring and at night. To give you a background we are 3 guys from Essex that have always done odd things and liked the paranormal places (Alot of time spent at Severalls at night) but we have started to run out of places and the buzz had faded away. We always liked the idea of exploring abandoned places so we lurked around the forums and found HMS Ganges. We done some research and really liked the history and variety of buildings, we also wanted to test security, ease of access etc. before going back during the day so off we set.

We arrived in Shotley and found the site really easily, we parked up and scaled the perimeter and found that behind the marina area there is an old gate which we simply just squeezed through and I'm 6ft4 20stone so I recommend this for anyone who does not like climbing. Once we were in and the initial rush of we have made it in! we started to realise the size of this place, it is like a town within a village and under the dense undergrowth there were houses, roundabouts and street lamps! It was almost as if we were the only people left on earth. Anyway we continued on hesitantly and almost with military precision to ensure we did not get caught.

After about 2 hrs of looking at the outer buildings and living quarters, we wanted to find the swimming pool area as seen on other threads. Now we thought we saw a car so decided too see if we could find a back way and literally scaled the whole perimeter and there probably is ways through the undergrowth but it was pitch black and underestimated the size of the site. We walked down the path just right of the large white structure and I joked could you imagine if that siren went off, then all of a sudden a door flung open and 2 security men came charging towards us! Luckily I can move for a larger man and my 2 friends can also run, the security men quickly came to realise this and stopped chasing rather swiftly. At this point we appreciated there doing a job and did not want to tempt fate and left the site.

Please see a few pictures we got below if your interested, please again remember this was our first time and we underestimated a lot of things, we didn't feel to comfortable climbing into buildings that were structurally unstable at night. Tonight we are going to do 2 places in the Suffolk area that seem to have good access and could be enjoyable at night, we have some better lighting equipment and hope that we can give some of these buildings a different and almost gothic character at night.

Hi Barry, welcome to the site.

The photos are very small! I'm far too lazy to click through on each one, and many others will be too, so bigger would be better in the future. :)

As for comfort zones, stick with what feels right to you. Pushing things a little bit is good but safety first always.

Did you see any ghost there Barry
Fortunately not, ironically it was more eerie then places such as borley rectory which everybody raves about. Off too Rougham Hall tonight so if I see any then I will try get a photo with Casper!
