RAF Folkingham aka the Digger Graveyard

I have wanted to visit this site for some time now since I saw some reports on here a few years ago. I didn’t come across as many military vehicles as I would of hoped, but then again, I never got around to covering all of the site as the light started to fade. I do tend to faff about a bit, so I have been told but not using them exact polite words, so I only have myself to blame…if someone else had of been with me then I’m sure it would have been their fault and not mine:p

I should really call myself “derp revisit” as I often find myself doing this. But I do enjoy a good revisit because the light maybe different, seasons change, stuff rusts and I can move that coke can out of the foreground which ruined the shot last time round, as I find it a hell of a lot less stressful to drive 200 miles, spend money on petrol and eat yet another miserable mc d’s than to actually learn how to use the clone tool.
I have to have help with my processing or I would be issued with an ASBO for swearing loudly all night and throwing my laptop out the window. I will get the hang of processing one day, I hope, but just not at the moment as my head still hurts from downloading wotsapp to my phone and that would be a techno overload to learn anything else in the same month.

A little history…

Opened in 1940 RAF Folkingham in Lincolnshire was used by both the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Forces. Its primary use was as a troop carrier airfield for the airborne units and as a training depot for the newly established RAF Regiment.

After The Second World War it was placed in care and maintenance and in 1947 the RAF Regiment relocated to RAF Catterick in North Yorkshire. RAF Bomber Command used Folkingham as an Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) base.

I was very lucky to have some warm afternoon light towards the end of the day, as earlier on it was either overcast or periods of harsh bright sunlight, which didn’t show the lovely tones of the rust.

loving the warm rusty tones of your photos, excellent to see. whats the story of why all these vintage diggers and road rollers have been left to rot away here then?

The guy that owns the land has a vehicle scrap yard near the site and thats where he stores a lot of his parts, spares etc...it doesn't look like a lot can actually be used again though as most of it appears very rusty.
