Hi All
Back to the dark side of DP, twice in 2 days.
This location follows on from my post about the Lord of Wantage and the "" possible hunting lodge, heading back towards East lockinge you pass
Chalkhill quarry and with in the bowl is a very old lime kiln, I had a quick look on old maps and it is shown as far back as 1878.
From what I could see, crushed chalk and charge would be loaded in to the kiln via the top, then a good fire set and air would be drawn in through
the flue at the base.
After I went down in to the pit there are 2 kilns and the charge pits are still there and NOT back filled, charge pit 1 is at least 30-40 feet deep.

Not a great shot but there was not much room, even for a skinny git like me, this is after I crawled through the flue and the shot is looking up
in to the charge area.
After this I though "I wonder if there is anything left up top" when I found the tops of the kilns, wow baby health and safety nightmare.
