The last thread i'll post in 2016.

I last came down this way a few years ago, long before I started taking photos of derelict places. I was able to get down this way with my camera and take photos of them today. There used to be a railway line through this area, not all of it applies for what remains there today. I spotted four buildings, there may be many more left that I haven't noticed. I will return soon.

A concrete railway hut.

Hmmm, the first building is a plate layers hut for the railway, the other buildings are ww2 era, buildings two and three look like M&E buildings with an oil tank and generator set, and the other looks like a little picket post of some description so I'm guessing there was an airfield nearby.

Those are interesting pics Dauntless, a good walk with with bits of history as a bonus, I've spent many a pleasant afternoon doing this and the dog enjoyed it as well.

Building 2 is the brick base structure of a rectangular static water tank, and the large cylinder is a 'pressure surge' relief or 'cushion' vessel. The static tanks were made from relatively thin section steel plate, with little or no internal baffling and as in this case, the water was supplied from a local underground source. With the drilling and insertion of a feed pipe into the underground spring/source, there was inevitably a build up of pressure when the supply was switched off when the tank became full. In an untapped water source any pressure buildup just permitted into the rock strata, in this case the heavy steel cylinder absorbed the pressure surges and stopped the thin storage tank from distorting. Interesting to note the typical use of the brick structure to support the four line side telephone insulators - save a wooden telegraph pole where ever possible.

Krela's comment about the 'picket post' stirs a vague memory - is it adjacent to the trackway and are there any 'Nissen' hut like foundations near to it and the trackbed? Years back I saw some photographs of a Nissen hutted storage compound for 'None Charged' munitions. i.e. grenade bodies without their detonator and explosive charge. Clumber Park was full of similar storage, low, squat open ended nissens full of crates of glass winchesters containing all sorts of liquid chemicals etc., hidden under the trees alongside the avenues. Given the time period, mid 50's to very early 60's, it may have been Civil Defence Stores for the Notts/South Yorks Civil Defence Corps. It was also interesting to see in the 70's; train loads of open mineral wagons full of grenade/mills bomb bodies, shunted into the small sidings under Balby Bridge in Doncaster whilst they awaited Engine and Crew to complete their journey to the Scrap Furnaces of Sheffield. It was also said that tons of surplus horse shoes of WW1 origin also made the journey to Sheffield at this time (believable because the advent of the IC engine did somewhat suddenly reduce reliance on four legged horse power). Suppose they'd all end up in China today!
