Hi all,

Finally got to tick this place off the list today. I went in without any real expectations for anything amazing, but wow, this place is quite something.

Clockhouse brickworks is a Hanson owned factory that made bricks of various shapes and sizes. It's based just of the A24 in Capel, its not even worth being vague about the location cause its so ridiculously easy to find.

It closed in 2009 and has remained quite well preserved. Its evident vandals have found their way in because of the sheer amount of broken glass. Apart from this the rest of the machinery and factory is pretty intact and looks like it could be made to work again if needed. This place is massive and we only got to look through the main building before we had to go. I could easily go back for another look round.

Getting in and out unnoticed though seemed like a tricky proposition as it seems security is active there, so some careful planning was required. Luckily there was no sign of anyone, so our explore went uninterrupted :D
Access was easy too!

Passing the old quarry in the way in.

We went into the furnace room. Its massive, probably a couple hundred meters long.

There was also a weird spinning bell thing inside. It must have had a great bearing because it just keeps spinning.

The tool making shop was full of stuff as if they just upped sticks and left it all behind. This can be said about the whole factory too.

We decide it was time to leave and made a retreat through the woods at the front passing the other smaller building. Couldn't see anyway in so this will have to be visited another day.

Nice to see afew people exploring here recent. I wouldn't mind going back tbh, yeah, the place is huge with a lot to see. Nice one

The colours in there are fantastic. Makes a change from drab interiors!
Fantastic photos and write up. Thanks for sharing :)

Great photos. I love all the colours. Worth going back just to spin the "bell".

DiggerDen;304035 Worth going back just to spin the "bell".[/QUOTE said:
The bell is a 'dumb capstan' (not powered by a motor), a rotating guide for a wire hawser. The wire rope was probably a secondary method of moving the stacks of product through the kilns if the chain conveyor failed or jammed. The wear pattern made by the wire can still be seen, even on the rotating capstan.

Still looks pretty good despite the abuse it's taken. The older building is worth a visit if you can find a way in.

Ha you must of just missed us, can see my hand mark in the brick dust on the control panel! (Not the penis!)

Love this site, soo underrated! A proper revisit will be on the cards very soon! ; ) Great report! : ) (Y)
