A few mentions of overlay files possibly getting a bit lost burried in threads with more specific titles. Perhaps a sticky thread of specific downloadable files that people find useful would be good?
Some discussion of what people are using might be interesting?
I tend to use Memory Map rather a lot as I can use it pretty much anywhere. Though not quite as dynamic as google earth/ms virtual earth etc it does have the advantage that overlay files can be used easily on a mobile device such as a phone (windows mobile OS only).
I keep overlay files for DoB (though there is a google earth overlay downloadable from the DoB website and another with user submissions via the 'google earth commuinity' bulletin board), subbrit database, ww2 artifacts, uk airfields and a whole host of other things.
I do also use google earth but generally only when near my desk...creating keyhole markup files for geograph photos is quite a handy way of quickly combining data obtained from geograph photo submissions.
Appologies if this is considered 'off-topic' by not being more specific
