This is an excellent brief history detailing the abuses at the York Asylum. Samuel Tuke and Godfey Higgings the magistrate, fought to bring Moral treatment to pauper patients at the turn of the 19th century despite Dr Best of the York asylum's resistance. Godfrey Higgings was instrumental along with Samuel Tuke in bringing this moral treatment to the new Wakefield Asylum 1818, later Stanley Royd.
