The current Newhaven Fort structure was built around the 1860's and is the largest work of defence ever constructed in Sussex. It has stood firm as a vital element in Britain’s coastal defence through two World Wars. Its most famous moment was in August 1942 when Newhaven was the departure point for the ill-fated Dieppe Raid of World War Two.

Following its abandonment as a military fortification, Newhaven Fort suffered years of neglect, dereliction and vandalism.

In the main, the fort is now a popular visitor attraction as the local council restored the fort in the 1980's. However, away from the tourist trail lies many largely forgotten parts to the fort:
