Hi All

This was our first port of call on the Wales 4 day madness trip. All the building that form the transmitter site are now in private ownership, we were lucky to find the owner of this
building working on the outside getting it ready for the winter. The plan for this building is for the owner to live in one area and then turn the rest of the site/building in to a radio museum.

Just a wee bit of history from wiki-thing-a-ma-bob.

Criggion Radio Station was a transmitter site latterly operated by BT on behalf of the MOD. It was located near the village of Criggion which is north of Welshpool.

It was established in World War II as a back-up unit for Rugby Radio Station and took over the latter's traffic for a short period in 1943 following a fire at Rugby. Operating on 19.6kHz
with the callsign GBZ, the station was used until its shutdown on April 1, 2003 for sending messages to submarines.

OK on with a few pictures.

This is the main building.

Time to pop inside, we were lucky that the owner showed us around and explained what each room was used for.

Stairs leading down in to a lower level plant room.

Plant room and steel ladder, the ladder goes up in to a roof space which did house a water tank.

I seem to recall there being very tall masts in this area which were a mystery. It was less than 20 years ago when they were decomissoned and the truth came out that they were used to communicate with submarines at extrtemely low frequencies (ELF). I wonder if the masts are still there?

Hi all
The masts came down a few years back, the masts were 600+ feet tall and there were 3 of them.
