Folkestone ROC Post (2nd Site) - Kent Group - Feb 2012

Had a look at this one not expecting to find it open, but it did open after using a bit of elbow grease
Post is situated on a hill overlooking the Channel Tunnel Terminal. One of 2 ROC posts near Folkestone (1st Site is sealed), im not sure the exact reason why there were 2 sites. Seems to have had new lighting fitted fairly recently, and a mains electric connection for a generator perhaps?

Thats interesting, the fuse box and large sockets are later additions.

Regarding glitto, i have visited probablys over 100 posts up to now and never seen one can of glitto!

I will look into my archives and find why the first one closed (should have the answer by tonight)

Interesting to see those newer fuse boxes, and not sure but from speaking to observers in the past I remember them mentioning the first site. Think it was closed due to fears of it falling off the cliff due to erosion, yet its still there so they worried for nothing!

The first site was sealed durng the mid 1980s because of subsidence I believe. It was on the East cliff directly in Front of the martello tower (the one that is now a private residence). During dry weather, you can see the outline of the bunker walls imprinted in the grass. The land was slipping towards the sea at an alarming rate apparently, so they decided to resite on safer ground - hence the more modern fittings. There's quite a bit about it on the Kent History Forum.

They still wouldnt have fitted a fuse box like that though - that must have been put in after standdown

It has a modern 16amp connector for hooking up a genny on the outside feeding down to the fuse box, it has plastic trunking fitted, all too modern for my liking , it looks like an attempt was made to make this an office or some sort of habitable refuge.

Or possibly a Cannabis farm, for lighting/heat there would be no other reason to put such a big RCD box down there!

Well - just realised my former physics teacher used to man this one, so I shall email and ask him if it made an appearance pre-stand down!

There's also a reference to the generator use made by a former ROC member here, so it may have been contemporary. An interesting conundrum, whatever the case.

Sod the Glitto and the speculation about whether it was later used as a cannabis farm or a ham radio shack, there were friggin horses in there and that’s got to be a first.

I didn’t even know there was a second site until today ! I accidentally found site 1 when I was at Martello tower !

this one looks like it in good condition too
