Always referred to as the broom street works, I didnt realise that the broom street works was actually a broom works on broom street which is presumably why it has the name broom streel & not just a random works on broom street or a massive coincidence!
Not much history to be had for this one Im afraid

For ages this was one I "never bothered" with but to echo prev reports its quite a little gem once you get past the mundane terrace frontage!
First one is greeted by some rather nice sliding door action

Once inside there is some lovely broomy machiney things but despite my engineering background I still have no idea how any of them worked!

Hope that one didnt bore u too much!

Certainly are some very odd complex machines in there particularly the one in picture 6. Who would have thought making Brooms could be so interesting?

yeah its a pleasant surprise. Unfortunately Iv heard this is now being demoed

It's just the tall crumbly building with the soggy draughtsmans office that's being demo'd, that's all the planning application was for. Was probably at risk of falling into the footpath or something!

Strange why would u apply to just demo that? surely u would apply to demo whole lot.
Wouldnt of thought they would rebuild on that front with the back still there but it is Stoke so will prob just remain as a plot of land for years

Pity that the tall office at the front has been demolished, IIRC the company name/ logo was painted on the gable. The machines were interesting, one of them was NC controlled using punched tape, hence an ancient predecessor of CNC machine tools...

That brings back memories. In the late 1960's I was working as a jig and tool design draughtsman and amongst other things, was responsible for designing jigs for and programming a Vero tape controlled drilling machine. At the time I could read the binary coding off of the tapes just as easy as reading a book.....

How's your Morse code?!

Well I got my Amateur Radio Licence in 1979, but sadly now, after 40 odd years, the ability to read the dots and dashes has gone the same way as binary on punched tapes.......;)

I knew I shouldn't have asked!! I understand Morse is no longer a requirement to obtain the amateur licence. Oh tempora, oh mores!

Out of interest, here's the catalogue relating to the tape-controlled brush-making machine which was (and presumably still is) lying on the floor at the back of the brush works.
