had to get out of the house today as my daughter had the devil in her, decided to talk a walk around sutton hospital. parts are still live. wasnt very interesting to be honest, apart from the swimming pool but i believe this may have been part of the marsden hospital which is next door. the place didnt seem to have much atmosphere. waiting for a bus home on the marsden site though i sensed a very sad atmosphere, given its a cancer hospital i suppose thats no suprise. took some pics though of sutton hospital as you never know how long these places will remain for.

brief history [what i can find] : The South Metropolitan District Schools (Plate 9 below), built in 1852-3 on the site of Balmoral Way and Homeland Drive, provided vocational (‘industrial’) education for up to 1500 poor children from Greenwich, Camberwell, and Woolwich.

In 1882-3 the schools acquired from the Sutton Lodge estate a site on Banstead (now Cotswold) Road for a separate girls’ establishment. This was in six blocks, each housing 100 girls. Some of these remain as parts of Sutton Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Sutton Hospital houses a modern day surgery unit with dedicated theatre facilities and 32 beds. There are also departments of lithotripsy, dermatology laser care, pain management and a large ophthalmology outpatient service. A number of other outpatient services are provided together with radiology, physiotherapy and separate day hospital facilities for the elderly.

Sutton Hospital is the centre for mental health (child, adult and elderly) services that are now managed by the South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust.

not# that i could see, ive read a site report somewhere, unsure if here or on 28dl but it wasnt very interesting inside from what i could make out, esp as half or maybe over half is live.

Hmmm...I was riding past that boarded up building (last two pictures) at the weekend. That looks well do-able, and there is hardly anyone around. I'll scope it out imminently Anthill - we'll get inside yet!!!
