The Second Essex County Asylum (later Severalls Asylum, Severalls Mental Hospital, Severalls Hospital) -the Laying of the Foundation Stone -21st. day of June, 1910
In fact, by 1910, construction of the Main Hospital buildings was well underway. Some of the Wards were up to roof level, and the newest landmark, the mighty Water Tower, was reported to already be visible from Colchester Town.

The Foundation Stone was "laid" by the then Chairman of the Committee of Visitors from the Commissioners in Lunacy, Sir Thomas Barrett Lennard. Sir Thomas' involvement in the early years of the Asylum was commemorated when one of the "Central Wards" on the West (Male) side, was re-named Barrett-Lennard.
Currently in the process to determining if the Local Mental Health Authority are planning on organising some sort of Event to mark the Official "start" of building works for the Centenary next year. Update on this as & when
