WARNING - PIC HEAVY!

After being told of a massive asylum in North Wales by Apopcalypic and being told that he had a few days off work, the idea of a roadtrip was born. ekp09 had never been to an asylum before (apart from the one I live in :p), so really wanted to go. I saw this site on Google maps and it looked massive so I also really wanted to go.

This was one of two sites we went to/saw.

A little history... The North Wales Hospital (locally known as Denbigh Mental) was a hospital for people with psychiatric illnesses located in Denbigh, North Wales. The building dates back to the late 1800's, but it was closed in sections from 1991 to 2002.

On Halloween night 2008, there was a live series filmed there by Most Haunted, which was done over the course of a week.

On 22 November 2008, during work to renovate the building site and convert it to apartments and residential properties, the building caught fire; it was later confirmed that the main hall of the hospital was destroyed.

(taken in parts from [ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Wales_Hospital[/ame]).

Visited with KingofDerby, ekp09 and Apopcalyptic, big thanks to Apopcalyptic for driving.

Anyways, on with the photos!

The first building we saw was what looked like it was a church. Inside, it looked like it could've easily come straight from a Disney film/fairytale.

After, we found one of several buildings.

For those who like their corridor porn, there's lots around, such as...

Not the best example, I know.

After wondering around for a while, we found the way to where the great hall once stood. Here are two views, taken from the opposite ends...

We then carried on exploring other parts.

ekp09's in the background, I scared her when I took this photo

Interesting sign...

A lift shaft that comes complete with lift and chair.

Talking of chairs, we found this one in a corridor. Apopcalyptic has photos of people in said chair.

In another corridor, there was this massive hole in the floor. Needless to say, we didn't try to get past.

We then found what looked like wards.

This was some of the front of the building, we didn't go all the way around to the front.

When we left, we came across two things - a large pile of wood and stuff, some of which was burnt, that we guessed was part of the Great Hall, and we also came across this sign.

We drove around to the front of the building to get one more photo.

I completely forgot I had the wide-angle lens so had to make do with an 18 to 55.

With an amazingly awesome explore done, we were tired and it was time to get some food and head back to the campsite.

Thanks for reading :)

Very good pictures. I really like the church-like building.

Nice pics J. Mine are to follow, when and *if* DPD deliver my new hard drive. My current one died a couple of days after the trip, potentially losing me around 2500 photos. I'm not best pleased, either with the hard drive, or with the fact that DPD were paid for NEXT DAY DELIVERY. It was meant to arrive yesterday. grrrrrrr...

Christ, what a mess. That place looks horrendous. I guess that's what you get when you leave a building vacant for 15 Welsh Winters :p

But that's a great report, very in depth, and you've found some nice details.

Love the chair - Good report! :)

Thanks guys :)

It was a state, but I guess that's what gave the building atmosphere to it, apart from knowing that it was an asylum. It reminded me slightly of Aston Hall, except much, much bigger and less like pikeyville, though we did come across a group whilst we were there!

I took more photos but some of them were out-of-focus, sadly.

I wish I had a macro lens so I could've focused on much tinier detail.

That'll be... the church. :p

Nice photos, is that gaping hole in the floor near the main entrance/reception? I remember skirting around it when it was a bit more intact. That's quite a long drop...

Thank you :) I can't remember if it's near the main entrance, but I think it's near the service tunnels. Yeah, I wanted to get a photo where you could see through the floor and out aswell as sseeing the rest of the corridor. I wouldn't like to fall down there
