[Confession, this isn't new. Comes from Spring this year.]

St Peters is a large general hospital with A&E in Chertsey. The mortuary only became part of St. Peter's within the last 15 years or so. It was originally developed as part of Surrey County Council's "Botleys Park" Colony for mentally defective persons, designed by architect JM Sheppard during the 1930's in the grounds of a mansion.

"A row of body fridges"

St.Peter's was constructed as part of the emergency medical services scheme in anticipation of increased casualty numbers during WWII. Most of Botleys Park closed during the 1990s with a few services retained as Bournewood. The majority of surviving buildings were subsequently annexed by St. Peter's but are pending redevelopment.
The mortuary was used until April 2009, until it's replacement by a larger facility, closer to the main hospital buildings.

"Cleaning hose on a morgue slab"

Morgues are morbid places by their very purpose. It's hard not to think about what went on in these rooms. There's a certain creepy atmosphere which I have only felt once or twice before; in other morgues and the patient art room at West Park.

"Lab sink in the autopsy room"

Over in one corner, a menu... Not very appetizing though!

"Mark it up!"

There's more to make this place creepy than the cold, the off-white, the smells, thoughts and sounds... The building is slowly being surrounded by foliage. It casts a guant light where it presses against the windows...

"The Autopsy room in full, with 3 nearly intact slabs"

The whole while here, I was reluctant to touch things... I'm not squeemish. Drains are proof of that... Dead bodies on the other hand...

"Biohazard!"

Weights and measures on a conversion chart sat in a quiet corner...

"I am duly converted"

And we wrap up with a reminder that this morgue wasn't all stainless steel and metallic instruments, slicing through flesh and bone...

"Chapel of Rest"

Thanks for reading :)
