A fascinating two-three storey wooden sanatorium based on a German design. Its many uses have included a luxury hotel, billet for troops, and NHS residential home for the eldery. It was last used as a sanatorium in the Aberdeen typhoid epidemic of the '60s. It's currently up for redevelopment, thanks to greed on the NHS's part - the hospital was gifted to the people of Scotland by the Red Cross.

I know my gran worked in one of the TB hospitals around aberdeen in the 50s/60s, not sure which one though, and she's now got severe alzheimers so I'm unlikely to find out. :(

This looks similar to the one that was on restoration a year or two ago, they're pretty unique places usually in lovely settings.

It's very likely that this was the hospital, as it's quite near Aberdeen. This was the one that was on Restoration - shame it's just going to be redeveloped and will be stripped of its character.

It's based on a Bavarian TB hospital, not sure if the original still exists though.

There used to be few of them about. Gartloch asylum had a single storey one built in 1902 under 'Messrs. Spiers patented composite system in iron and wood'. One like Glen o dee still exists at Mundesley in Norfolk (used as a church retreat). I understand that they were built in such a way so that they could be completely burnt in case of the need to spread of infection (should it appear).

I'd never have thought on that being the reason for them being built in wood (I figured the main reason being that it was quicker to construct), thanks for the info. I'm guessing the sanatorium at Gartloch is long-gone? Mundesley looks quite interesting though.

The Gartloch sanatorium was apparently in use up to the 1980's (presumably not for TB cases?) but was demolished after it's closure. It was located close to the main gate. Mundesley was quite nice. We stopped by to check it out and although it was a bit run down, turned out to be occupied.
