Barrow Gurney Hospital, January 2011

You probably all know the history by now as it's pretty well documented.

The south side seems to have been completely flattened. There's only brick piles left. Some of the smaller buildings on the west side are still standing, but they're far too messy to be of any interest.

On with the photos. Mashedfish and I are more the artsy types than the documenting type, so bear with us:




























As you can see, the place is a mess. The wind whistles through the place, which sounds spookily like human whistling, the rain is coming in through the roof and doors are just swinging/slamming in the wind.



Also a creepy little story: We came close to a little bat enclosure thing that had been set up to house the on site bats. We did the responsible thing and didn't touch it. The wooden door was closed. We turned away to plan our route out. We were facing away from the bat enclosure for about 5 seconds max. When we turned back, the door was wide open and sitting still (we didn't catch it mid swing). Neither of us heard it open and it wasn't the most secure door in the world. The only sight greeting us on the other side of the door was a ladder leading down into a pitch black hole. Creepy as fuck. We shut the door a walked off rather hastily.

That's just the service entrance to the utility tunnels that run throughout the site... alas the tunnels are not very interesting and full of asbestos. I guess the hinges of the door are well oiled though!

Ive only ever been to this place once, back in mid 2008 with Duke and dangerous dave. Tramping round this place at 2 am with the rain pouring in and the wind howling through the place slamming doors in the distance was not a pleasant experience, even less pleasing when the other two climbed out of our window of entry and it closed leaving me inside fiddling to get the sodding thing back open. Not pleasing one bit.

I love the curved, sloped corridor

I only had a wee poke about the place but is nice enough if youre in the area.
