Well we all knew it was coming and started it has..

Apparently some of the original buildings will be kept and refurbished.

The losses so far are only the boiler house and caretakers store and yard, with a few later extensions removed around site. The service tunnels have all been opened and a drainage trench from the tunnels to the main sewer has been dug to try and drain the flooded service tunnels.

Molitor house and the mother & baby unit have had all the tiles stripped and the roof joists are coming off.

THE developer of the former Barrow Gurney Hospital is asking for reactions to an increase to the number of homes planned for the site.

The site, owned by Del Pierro, has planning consent for 18 luxury homes and 405,000sq ft of office space, including around 260,000sq ft of new-build.

Now plans have come forward to increase the number of homes to 43 and reduce the amount of office space to around 45,000sq ft.

The space once earmarked for offices has already been reserved for a multi-million-pound care village, plans for which have already been submitted to North Somerset Council.

Housing developer David Wilson Homes, which is looking to develop the site along with Gloucestershire-based English Care Villages, is now consulting villagers and parish councils on the plans before submitting an application.

Planning permission to develop the site was granted two years ago but work has yet to begin.

Pegasus Planning Group, which is working on behalf of David Wilson Homes, has now sent out leaflets to residents explaining the plans and is planning to meet neighbouring parish councils to discuss the scheme.

Pegasus director Rob Duff said: "Since planning permission was granted, the market has changed and it is now unviable to go ahead with the office scheme in the current market.

"Del Pierro has been trying to find a viable use for the site which would mean the development of the site can move forward."

The site has fallen victim to vandals since the hospital closed five years ago, with people breaking into the site and damaging the specially made bat houses.

The care village includes a 38-bedroom care home for the frail and elderly and those needing convalescence and respite care.

There are also plans to build 98 assisted living and eight linked assisted-living apartments on the site and 23 close-care apartments where residents subscribe to a package which includes food, utility bills, daily care and cleaning and laundry.

There will also be a 56-bedroom nursing home for people needing 24-hour care and a series of shops, including a restaurant and cafe bar, in a special village centre complex.

The scheme would create more than 120 jobs.

Geoff Coombes, chairman of Barrow Gurney Parish Council, said: "We would like to see more information on the scheme before we make any decision on the application."
