The Northampton Poor Law Union formally came into being on 27th August 1835. Its operation was overseen by an elected Board of Guardians, 33 in number, representing its 17 constituent parishes of Northampton - Abington, Bugbrooke, Dallington, Duston, Great Billing, Little Billing, Harpole, Kingsthorpe, Kislingbury, Nether Heyford, Northampton All Saints, Northampton St Giles, Northampton St Peter, Northampton St Sepulchre, Upper Heyford, Upton, Weston Favell.
With the population falling within the parishes (The 1831 census showed a total of 21,761) and each one ranging in size from Upton (population 48) to Northampton All Saints (7,333). The average annual poor-rate expenditure for the period 1832-5 had been £8,458 or 7s.9d. per head of the population.
Northamptons workhouse was built in 1836 at the north side of the Wellingborough Road, to the north-east of the Northampton. It could accommodate 300 inmates and it cost approximately £7,000. The building was designed by George Gilbert Scott who was the architect of many other workhouse buildings including ones for the nearby Kettering and Oundle Unions. The main workhouse building had a cruciform layout, as shown on the 1901 map below.
To the north of the workhouse is an infirmary building dating from around 1870.The workhouse had its own large school building which stood to the west of the workhouse. After 1930, the workhouse was taken over by the Northampton Borough Council and renamed St Edmund's Hospital which continued in operation until 1998. The site is currently undergoing redevelopment and much of the hospital is now gone.

Explored in the good company of James and Blackeagle many thanks for the company.

Thanks for looking

According to the two scaffolders we bumped into on the way out they are developing it and the fact these guys were re-propping a collapsed section I would have to believe them. Chalk a high 5 up for a developer at last :)

Nice one mate. I remember that old place when I was unfortunate enough to live in Northampton. Thanks, nd glad to hear its being sorted.

I hope to do a quick return to this place as didnt get to fo the rear buildings or part of the front, more down to the scaffolders being there and feeling I had outstayed my welcome. :)

Look forwards to that - what about the 'Northampton Tunnels' ?

The only tunnel I have been through was Old Warden and SK will remember the fun we had with that one :)

I can remember the issue of the tunnels coming up in the 'Chronicle & Echo' and the local council said that as far as they were aware they (the tunnels) did not exist, but anyway there was no way into them! Nice gaff!
