it`s such a shame when great building`s become disused and fall derelict and this workhouse hospital is no exception opened in 1909 due to the poor law union and this would of held many frail and ill people from the workhouse, the workhouse is long demolished and now is the site of a nursing home..but this site lay in the hands of the nhs for years and in 2006 the closure was announced and was to hit 3 hospitals in the stoke area which as it happens all evolved from workhouses...so you can imagine how poor stoke was back then. but this complex is due to close in September but a lot of the buildings are empty now and falling into decay ! so we drew our plans and had a early morning visit. and these are the pictures.........i better add the location is now known as the WESTCLIFF HOSPITAL.... the complex is just like another outstanding workhouse called wordsley.

Thanks for the pics. not heard of this one before. looks very clean inside. what are they going to do with it? hope its not another one thats gonna be knocked down and redeveloped. grrr!!!

A lot of these old workhouse buildings have been turned into hospitals, we've got one in mansfield, but sadly a lot of the workhouse parts have now been demolished and new parts built. would rather these buildings than the newer.

thanks again for the pics and the report. you've got some good pics there.

:) Sal

Great find there!

Lovely architecture, I think captured well with your pics.
The whole "letting a building fall into disrepair" makes me so mad!!
Hope that the NHS will ensure this building is sold to a sympathetic Developer, who will convert instead of demolish.
Please, please, please, please, PLEASE can we see some more inside pics, it ya have any more? :)

Lb:cool:

Potter, the one in Mansfield is now the Victoria Community Hospital, at the bottom of Sutton Road. There's only a few of the original workhouse buildings left now (backs onto the Dallas Street Centre ;) ) most of it is now the newer red brick parts. grrrr!!!

I read somewhere else (can't for the life of me remember where tho :( ) that before the workhouse on sutton road ^^ there used to be another one. still working on trying to find that one tho, don't think theres anything left of that one.

:) Sal

ps Cheers again for the pics of the hospital. it does look great. thanks again.
