Default Severalls Hospital - Dec 2015

A site that has been done many times before, here is a brief history.

Severalls Hospital in Colchester, Essex, United Kingdom was a psychiatric hospital built in 1910 to the design of architect Frank Whitmore. It opened in May 1913.

The 300-acre (120 ha) site housed some 2000 patients and was based on the "Echelon plan" - a specific arrangement of wards, offices and services within easy reach of each other by a network of interconnecting corridors. This meant that staff were able to operate around the site without the need to go outside in bad weather. Unlike modern British hospitals, patients in Severalls were separated according to their gender. Villas were constructed around the main hospital building as accommodation blocks between 1910 and 1935. Most of the buildings are in the Queen Anne style, with few architectural embellishments, typical of the Edwardian period. The most ornate buildings are the Administration Building, Larch House and Severalls House (originally the Medical Superintendent's residence).

    Report

Fresh from the disappointment from being escorted from HMS Ganges, we headed over to Severalls. Having been a couple of times before and narrowly avoiding the Security patrols each time, we knew we needed to be smarter and quieter (easier said than done!). Instead of parking in our usual spot, we decided we would try to find a different means of access. We parked up, booted up and headed for the perimeter, which we walked for an age expecting to find an easy way in; this was not the case and lead to a lot of “we’re so close” comments.

Dejected, we headed for out usual entrance, to find Football Stewards standing right outside the access. Bugger! On around the perimeter we went, making one very ill advised run straight into a bush next to what looked very suspiciously like an active building (Check your map!) before we found our chance to get over that pesky fence. After over an hour of trying, we were in.

I took my final picture as it was it was getting dark and we headed off, looking for an easy way out. We found one in the form of a Security Guard walking the perimeter (twice in one day!?). He took us over to the main gate, took our names and let us out. We then walked back to the car cold, wet and aching. All in all a great day out! I am a little concerned about name taking, we were told if we were caught again our details would be passed to the NHS who would decide whether to prosecute us. What are you more experienced guys thoughts on this? A serious concern?

No concern at all, and there's no legal obligation to give your name to security, although they may just call the police if you don't. Of course you don't have to give them your right name... ;)

If the police ever are called, do give them your right name. All they will do is (maybe) search you, escort you off the premises and tell you not to return. No big deal.

Its just that he can record the details in a journal so, if you do appear again at Severalls then he can look back and remind you the we (Security) have told you before about this. You could use the name Sum Ting Wong for a laugh.

Cracking report! Hats off for getting in.
Yeah no worries on the name taking, you are under no obligation what so ever to even give them a name, but a fake name ticks their box.
Brilliant shots, thanks for sharing :)

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
