The History

Saint Cadoc's Hospital is located in Caerloen on the northern outskirts of the city of Newport.

The hospital, which opened in 1906 as the Newport Borough Asylum, was built to accommodate up to 350 patients. Extensive outbuildings were later added on the site, but since 2005 the number of residents has been very small with the growing emphasis on care in the community.

St Cadoc's Hospital provides a number of mental health services, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Adult Mental Health Services are provided by 11 Community Mental Health Teams and Elderly Mental Health Services provided by 5 multi-disciplinary Community Mental Health Teams.

The Explore

After seeing this crop up on here and spammed a little on Facebook, whilst in Wales with a non member checking out some other stuff we thought we would check this out too. We already had a bit of intel on how to get in but found this way well and truly locked up.

Bugger.

A different way in needed to be used so we had a good look around and eventually found an open door and walked in, only to be greeted by a nurse, oh bollocks we thought expecting to be kicked out. All she actually did was smile and say hello, result.

We found the place to be in very nice condition and very similar in interior design to Goodmayes in Ilford.

A lot of the original features where still in place including the “Facebook famous” operating chair.

After a few hours wandering around we left through the main admin door and headed off on our merry way.

Enjoy the pics

Hello!!

Was not me!! But i think i know who it would have been though!!

I actually caught someone taking photos upstairs in one of the wards this very afternoon.. They were very very polite and pleasant, but i had to hand them over to Facilities staff who instantly ejected them there and then..

I felt quite sorry for them to be honest. In fact, i did actually ask if they might be allowed to take a few more photos, [as they told me that they had not seen the hall yet] but this was refused.

As i say, the person concerned was VERY polite and pleasant, and, as i told them, quite few of the management actually like the photos you have all taken, but they cannot condone this sort of thing in a working hospital, it would be incompatible with their position..

If the fellow i met today [Friday 17th Feb] is reading this, can i just say that it was nice to meet you and i hope that [the hall aside] you got some nice photos!! [but i never said that!!]

Seriously though, they were truly an ambassador for your hobby [but not in a working hospital!!]

Thank you John, on behalf of us nosy buggers may I say we have no interest in exploring live sites, but we do at times make mistakes, we are sometimes fortunate and meet folks like yourself and the nurse MR encountered, and there's no harm done.

Hi all!!

Now, as i posted the other day, i personally caught someone in the old wards last friday afternoon [17th Feb 2017] They were very pleasant and friendly, but were escorted downstairs and ejected by facilities staff. I then spoke to senior management about the above incident.

As a result, since monday, work has proceeding at an unheard of pace, to secure the entire upstairs area, to include ALL of the old wards. This work has now, [as of this afternoon] been completed, and the place is now TOTALLY secure.

Just thought i would post this, as, i know that none of you intended any harm, and indeed, helped keep the place safe, so i just wanted to inform you all of the above, as i know that some of you drive hundreds of miles to take photos, and i would hate anyone to spend a lot of money on petrol and the like just to be disappointed.

I suppose from your point of view it was good while it lasted!!!

Thanks all..

john.
