    Default Whitchurch Hospital, Cardiff 2016-18

Whitchurch Hospital opened in 1908 as the Cardiff City Asylum. The main hospital building covered 5 acres and was designed to accommodate 750 patients across 10 wards, 5 each for men and women. During the First World War, the facility was called the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital. During WW2 part of the hospital was turned over to the military, becoming the largest emergency service hospital in South Wales. On 5 July 1948 the hospital was taken over by the Ministry of Health as the National Health Service came into existence, becoming Whitchurch Hospital. During the 1980s care in the community began to greatly reduce the number of resident patients, with the hospital finally closing in 2016.

Had a few good visits here over the last few years, nice to have a decent sized asylum to run about in like the old days! I think pretty much every photo i've ever taken in Whitchurch has turned out like crap, but it always seemed to be more about the experience being there than faffing around getting decent pics. It's been interesting to see the place gradually get cleared out, and the mix of modern pristine wards & very old fashioned decayed ones. On my last visit the place was suffering badly at the hands of the locals, who were in there running riot and smashing the place to bits. Hopefully the recently increased security presence will put paid to that!

That's quite a huge place and I'm assuming you didn't cover every building. I found your photos very good. A nice report.

Awesome photos. Love that dentist chair.
it's a shame I'm so far away from it.
Don't worry about security until you've been caught.

No shit pics there I really love this place with its unusual stripy brickwork, it def takes more than one visit to get to see around, faffing about or not .
Sadly its gone downhill a hell of a lot recently and Ive heard its being stripped at the moment. I really hope it actually survives and gets redeveloped without "accidentally being demolished or burnt down" which seems to happen with rather a lot of property developers.

Good job to get it all done man. I've heard they're filming some sort of show their currently so I'm not really sure what it'll be like afterwards.

Superb! Nice to see the hall in a clean state. It was still like that as recently as April, after the summer holidays it was a mess. They are currently stripping the place out and have 24/7 security with a dog handler. Parts are due to be demolished soon and other parts developed. Glad I got to see the whole place over 4 visits, it will always be a favourite of mine.

I really should edit my pics from here. Your pics remind me of how nice it was. The hall as mentioned was a state when I went.

Wasn't it 'the crown' that was being filmed. Sure I mind seeing pics of the signs.

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
