Cwm coke works opened in 1958, It was designed to centralise and maintain the production of South Wales foundry coke, The coal mined at Cwm was very suitable for foundry coke given its low sulphur content, Cwm Colliery was closed by the NCB in 1986 and the coke works ceased production in June 2002.

Visited with the usual peeps...

NIce work dude, glad my info helped, so much has gone again since we were last up there, such a wonderful site, but as usual being stripped by the day.

Gleat site, great pics love the shot of the tankers looks like the rails have gone from underneath them. As for the tipped over train the driver must have been very very drunk

Lol, from what I can remember the loco was tipped over to get at some spare parts for elsewhere.
Not many coke plants about now!

What an awesome site. Really wishing we had something like this up our way.

Thanks for posting. :)

This ones a bit nearer you, still working so it will be impressive.

Still quite a few miles away! I remember not so long ago that there were loads up this way. One that particularly stands out was at Monkton, South Tyneside. I would always look out for the "chimney with the big flame" when passing. Nowadays it is hard to believe what once stood at the site.

Would I be correct in assuming that the site in this thread would be heavily contaminated from the distilates given off during the conversion process? Were they always recovered for other uses or simply dumped somewhere?

All the by-products were collected and processed but I would guess the sites would be contaminated due to spills, pump leakage, fumes etc.

Type in Monkton Coke, some good vids about.
