This place has fascinated me since first seeing it as a kid. You dont get a feel on how huge the building is until your really near it. Lots written on-line about the history so I wont add.

After getting there via 'the scenic route' (an hour plus of walking) we eventually found ourselves under the colossal chimneys. The place is huge, imposing and also crumbling away. Must admit walking around the ground level it was a bit scary looking at the rusting, brickless bare pillars then looking up at the amount of bricks and steel above it. It was great fun.

Visited with natevanstate and LiamCH for a few hours and probably will again as we could not find the control rooms... really gutted! Anyone who has please, please PM me for directions.

Anyway first night time outing with my camera so it was a good test and wish I got more pics really. Couldnt really focus and shoot so strangely ended up on Manual getting to auto focus then turning onto manual to make it take the pic?!?? Any comments for improvement or shooting technique welcomed...

You defo' nailed them last two shots though, great exposure and composition

Great pics this is on my list of "want to go there"

DITTO! was looking at it from across the river the other week on a trip down London. I couldn't get over the scale of the place, even from that distance. I muct take a trip there one of the days for an explore!!:)

Good work fella, and the shots came out bloody well for a first attempt with the camera!

Nice one!

You have no need to worry as long as you stay outside the fencing  i just can't make that out, as it wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to your safety!

Truly fantastic site, i had the pleassure of working there several years ago on a film set

Very intimidating, yet elegent in a strange way......

Good to see these pics, i went on an official tour last summer, when they were pimping the grand development plans, has anything been started yet, or is it all on hold? seemed a bit 'pie in the sky' and way too ambitious, in the current state of things.

memories of pink floyd came flooding back there. Great photo's are they going to demolish it for the redevelopment plans

Thanks for the comments guys.

It looks like they have put the proposals in public view in Dec 2008 following plans last summer and public consultation. Planning Application will be submitted Spring 2009 apparantly. 'Highlights' include alot of architect and eco babble.....

An Eco-Dome(?)
Reduce height of chimney from 300m to 250m
Beneath the Eco-Dome the world’s first carbon neutral performing arts amphitheatre with a capacity for 2,000 people
Other additions to the development since the masterplan was announced in June include a primary school, nursery, large health centre and a community centre.

When the scheme is complete, the development will be home to some 7,000 new residents and up to 13,000 new jobs will be created. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2012 and the development will be complete by 2020 – subject to timescales through the planning process.
