Inverkip Power Station's chimney is, at 238m, the tallest free-standing structure in Scotland - the third-tallest in the UK. It's an important landmark for ships navigating the Firth of Clyde. The power station is now going to be demolished, so I thought it was worth a look.

20 minutes, 1060 steps, and a lot of puffing later, I got to the top:

The power station itself isn't small - it's over 50m high - but it looks tiny from the chimney:

The view of the pumping station is excellent:

Inside, most of the chimney is pitch black, but the top level has windows for a bit of light:

Lower down, and this is level 11 - the last telephone before the top, with a VHF radio on the desk:

Edit: I suppose I should also add a pic of the power station and chimney, to give an idea of scale:

My Flickr set has lots more pictures...

nice one !! it would take me hours to climb all them steps as i`d have to have breaks all the way up ...

Stunning pics though it had to be worth it.

20 minutes, is that all?
I found it harder on the way down, with my knees threatening to collapse and throw me down the stairs.

Awesome pictures. I'm soo jealous.

Hats off for the effort though - I'd have an asthma attack after twenty steps....

I get bored easily, so only stopped for a rest at level 20 :)

Going down, I was slower as I was counting the steps...

WOW!!! Awesome! It has rooms inside, I assumed it would be a hollow chimney. I also assume that everything is lagged in asbestos.

They're not really rooms - but there are four flues inside, with concrete floors every two turns of the spiral staircase. It's mostly fibreglass lagging, but some of it is airborne, so a good mask is essential.

Nice photo's.You wouldn't have got me looking over the edge of the tower though I'm no good with heights

That's awesome, I would love to go up this if I were nywere near scotland, thank god for the internet!

20 minutes! Christ... Took me a lot longer but then we did stop every few floors to look around and rest :p

(incidentally if anyone wants to see video of that see here)

Lovely photos, they're making me want to get a DSLR and a good wide angle lens even more than ever.

cracking pics.

I felt abit sick at the sight of the one over the edge though! Heights are not good

Nice video, Rob :)

You had one of Methil as well, didn't you? I studied it to work out access - didn't help as they've removed all that steelwork, but it was fascinating anyway...
