This has been covered several times, but I wanted to add my little report!
I went to have a look at this amazing viaduct today with my Mum & Dad. Apparently it's Grade II listed and was built using the same techniques as the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It would have cost far too much to dismantle, so it stayed!
I didn't manage to get up on the top of it, which was a bit disappointing, but I probably would have fallen through a big hole if I had done anyway! I basically just had a good walk round (with the constant background noise of chavs on pitbikes behind me!) and then crossed the railway to have a quick look at the canal.
I can't believe the whole site is so open 'cause there's so loads of deep holes everywhere and at least 4 ponds down by the viaduct itself. Then there's a big fat piece of concrete that looks like it used to be the roof of a building and its fallen over onto some metal cabinets and is just waiting to fall on someone. And if those aren't enough dangers for you, there's the old pit head that's full of rubbish and water and then a very deep looking pond that is fenced off, but has a huge gap underneath part of the fence, which defeats the object of the fence in the first place.
Anyway, as long as you don't fall down any holes, don't go skinny dipping and don't get mown down by a chav on a motorbike, you'll be fine. Unless all the dogs escape from the nearby kennels and maul you to death
