I spotted this building on my Duke of Edinburgh Hike, but my group would not stop to look :(
So I went back today to have a look around, from the outside it looks pretty unispiring, but on the inside, there are a lot of water tanks, with heating elements, so I assume that it was used to treat limestone from the former limestone quarry (now sainsburys)
Unfortunatley, access to the lower levels IS possible, but exiting it isn't  So I decided to not risk it. Here are the photos from the upper level (still dodgy access ;))

Exterior shot two, looks like something from an american gold mining town

Any better suggestions as to it's use?

Thanks For Looking,
James :)

Here's a very good clue, the lower level, but not directly under where you were

I'll go with the first guess. :)

To me the tanks look like electrolytic plating tanks. In the second last pic I can see two notched rails which may have held the work being plated.

I'm probably way way wrong but I did try. :)

It's appreciated. My dad thinks that too :)

Thanks for the lower level shots 85 Vintage, all the doors have piles of earth on front of them now. Did you manage the upper level? The only stairway is half missing.

Aye! There's a thought - There was bitumin residue in the tanks. So maybe it was something to do with tarmac production hence the "dirty work" sign. There is a working tarmac factory further down on the same site. I think I may have cracked it!

Does anyone agree?

I did :) Did all the buildings on the site, it was my first explore.

Under where you were had larger tanks, more than head high, with pipes connecting to the bit I showed. I went up to the upper level via the stairway!

Was an explore with a crap compact and no light painting ability, so can't remember if the pics came out ok. They're on the comp at my grandads. So will have a look when i'm there tomorrow.

It was a bitumen production place, made different types of bitumen. I know i got pics of the labels, will have a search for info on the again :)

Could well be - boil the bitumen up and pipe it into a mixer full of gravel. The steam filled heating elements would make the heating very safe by using no naked flames.

I did try though. :)

A shame it's not quarry related. :(;) Still an interesting find though, James. :)
I wouldn't have had a clue regarding it's use, so that's something else learned!

Oooooh this looks nice, I like it. I've been meaning to go and have a walk down that road everytime I've popped into Sainsbury's there. But still never got around to it. I'll have a pop over then now when Fairygirl goes back to school next week.

Cheers guys, good pics there.

:) Sal

You have to be an acrobat to get into the upper level, but try it by all means

It is a good explore if you just need to get a quick fix

Looks somewhat interesting this one, nice one James.

When I saw the first picture I groaned, thinking "boring". But I was pleasantly surprised, this is a very interesting thread and the site looks a lot better than the outside suggests. But you know what they say, never judge a book by its cover, eh?

D of E? Bronze, silver or gold? How old are you?

Thanks for sharing.
