I first visited this site about a week after it closed. It was a sad time for the Welsh miners as this site was due to close some years before but the workers bought the site and fought to the end to keep it alive.

I thought it was time for a re visit to see what had changed. Surprisingly after about 18 months of closure, the site is still staffed by a skeleton staff and some security. I had a chat to a few of the guys there and one of them recognised me from my last visit. I asked if I could take a few more pics and was told to help myself.:)

A final message from the workers

It was really sad to see how the place had changed. A lot of stuff has been removed and scrapped or sold on to other mines now. The men left at the site are a real good bunch of fellas - proper hard workers. They are a friendly bunch and you could feel the emotion in their voices as they spoke of Tower Colliery. You could tell that they felt part of the mine and would have done anything to keep it going but eventually, the coal had to run out. The place feels full of history and parts of it feel quite strange and eery now.
I wish all the staff there the very best for the future.

Jules

Edit - didnt put this in underground section as there is no underground anymore

Excellent post I'd been wondering what was going on here recently. Strange to think its only been closed 18 months of so.

Any idea if the winding house has been stripped or is the winder/ motors staying?

At the moment the motor gear is still in the winding house - was locked today - but I think from what was said it will eventually be stripped out. The winding house and headgear are both listed so will remain on site but as for the rest of the buildings - who knows?

poked my camera thru the window of the winding house
Came out fairly well as was handheld, dark and without flash!
