Brief timeline of the site..

1868 - Wardley No.1 Colliery opens.
1911 - Colliery closes.

1938 - Wardley No.1 Colliery reopens.
1947 - Colliery nationalised.
1959 - Merged with Follonsby Colliery.
1969 - Merged with Usworth Colliery.
1974 - Site closes.

1989 - Reopened as 'Wardley Disposal Point', to replace Swallwell Disposal Point which was to be used as the site of the Metro Centre.
1995 - Passed on to RJB Mining.
2005 - Site mothballed.


Currently used as a container storage area.


Not many photos as there isn't that much to see, interior photos upon the next trip though :D

Cool! Did you get down any of those conveyor tunnels?

Not on this visit, was rushed for time after spending the day visiting a number of colliery sites in south-east Northumberland.
Hopefully going back in the next few weeks though :mrgreen:
 
I would like to see these other collieries... ;)

Haha.. most turned out to be only a few minor buildings left standing - work sheds and such, taken over by local transport companies, etc.

The 'Fenwick Pit / East Holywell Colliery' report I've put up was the most interesting site I found in the area, but I'm currently documenting everything I can find still standing of the north-easts coal industry. So hopefully there's more to come :mrgreen:
