Just outside Aldermaston, down a little side road, there used to be a Conoco distribution terminal. Then it was closed down and heavily fenced off. These pix were taken a couple of years ago; nowadays it's being demolished for flats or houses or something and little of what you see below remains, though you can still see evidence of the railway sidings etc, leading off from the main line.

I must have built literally dozens of terminals just like this over the years for Texaco and Carless and other oil companies ...... and cut down / dismantled many many more too .....
...The gantries are for the now out moded system of loading tankers via 'top loading'...The practice is not used now due to the inherant dangers of a static electrical flash igniting the fuel vapours as the fuel splashed into the tanker....all tanker terminals now have to use 'bottom loading' systems which eliminates a lot of the problem of fuel splash and therefore vapour..................From what I can see in the pictures , apart from a few re-useable storage tanks the rest of that depot is probably nothing more than a load of good scrap iron......the cost of updating the loading gantries probably lead in some way perhaps to the descision to close the depot?.....boring details:neutral: ...I know.... sorry fer the anorak lesson.
