Production at Chatterley Whitfield Ceased in 1978, A Mining Museum opened the following year housing the British Coal Collection from the former National Coal Mining Museam at Lound Hall but struggled to remain financially viable despite various cash injections from british coal, going bankrupt for the last time in the early 90's, the site sat derelict and decaying untill 2005 when a £14million grant was awarded to restore some of the buildings and create a mixed use regeneration scheme. - many of the buildings and headgear are scheduled monuments. As of may 06 a new road infrastructure has been completed and the office and laboratory block has been converted.
