Default Nortel Networks - Harlow - May 2012

Recently went here with burb147. A generally chilled out explore. Definitely didn't see this place at its best!

Nortel Networks Corporation, formerly known as*Northern Telecom Limited*and sometimes known simply as*Nortel, was a*multinational*telecommunications*equipment*manuf acturer headquartered in*Ontario,*Canada.

How the Harlow site looked in 1966

Nortel acquired the Harlow laboratories, originally Standard Telecommunications Laboratories, in 1991. Nortel continued to use the site for research and development in wireless telecommunication technologies, It was the main centre for Europe, It boasted a state of the art building and labs. Staff at Nortel would be receive benefits such subsidised eateries, a social club, on site sports facilities and a fully equipped gym.

Some Nortel inventions over the years include:

1882 - The first telephone switchboard

1922 - The vacuum repeater tube without which, long distance telephone calls would not have been possible

    2001 - The world's first commercial 3G wireless network*

On January 14, 2009, Nortel filed for*protection from creditors*in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, in order to restructure its debt and financial obligations. In June 2009, the company announced it would cease operations and sell off all of its business units. On March 31st 2010, It was announced that the Harlowsite had been sold to Wireless Technology Laboratories Limited, a subsidiary of Ace Technologies Corporation.

Security doing a sterling job! He was actually on his phone. During the time there he also cleaned his car whilst listening to loud music!

Thanks for looking! As usual the rest of the photos are here!

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
