Can honestly say that this place has been at the very top of my list since I stumbled across Simon Cornwells site, when first researching places to explore. As a lover of all things industrial, this place above all others was the one I most wanted to see. After much planning a date was set, a night of sleep was sacrificed in favour of a long drive south, with 2 pick-ups en-route. Explored in the excellent company of Priority 7, Coverturbex, Urbanekul, lizm73 and MonkeyDan.

This is without doubt my favourite explore ever . . . so far! Little had I realised just how exhausting a whole day of running and climbing would be after no sleep, but for me it was worth every minute and after the spending the equivalent of a working day in there and with so much more still to see I cannot wait to go back.

Yes, I know it's a popular site and there have been many reports posted recently, but I hope you will indulge me by allowing me to share my take on this fantastic place.

Special kudos to MonkeyDan and he knows exactly why :)

Now for the bit that just about everyone will already know, but a report isn't a report without at least a little bit of history ;)

Straight out of Wiki:
For over 50 years Pyestock was at the forefront of gas turbine development. It was probably the largest site of its kind in the world. V bomber, Harrier and Tornado engines were tested on site. The power of the air house allowed Concorde's engines to be tested at 2,000*mph. Every gas turbine installed in Royal Navy ships was checked here; captured Soviet engines were discreetly examined. NGTE Pyestock closed down in 2000 and decommissioned to make way for a business park.

Pyestock was used for several scenes in the 2005 film Sahara. Internal sections of Cell 3 and Cell 4 were reworked for the film's supposedly solar powered waste disposal facility and evidence of this can still be seen today.

Not normally into taking pictures of ourselves on explores, as there are far more interesting things to photograph . . . but with those doors it had to be done ;)

It was a very windy day and I almost didn't do the climb to the roof of the Air House, but the views across the site were spectacular so very glad I did :)

Fantastic shots there, can't beat a bit of Pye...need to get my backside there I think ;)

Cheers for posting them up!

Very nice photos, great exposure and tasteful amount of HDR to pick out the detail. It's been a good five years since I had a look myself and spend around eight hours there, not even covering a quarter of the site.

Shame to see a some bits and pieces broken or trashed which I can remember being intact on my trip. In general it's holding up pretty well though.. at least until the demo crews get their hand on it all :(

It is a shame indeed . . . one of our group is a frequent visitor and made very similar comments . . . it is particularly apparent in the Air House where you can see where all the copper is being stripped from the turbines

Thanks everyone . . . really appreciate the lovely feedback . . . I think I took circa 600 shots on the day - yes, I admit I was like a child in a sweet shop for the first few hours, didn't know which way to look and which shots to take first . . . everywhere I looked there was so much I wanted to photograph . . . and since trawling through them all, so many more I wish I had taken!

It didn't help that I managed to injure myself by getting trapped in my own tripod within 5 mins of climbing down into cell 3 . . . one look at those doors and I couldn't get my tripod out quick enough . . . even if it meant taking a chunk out of my finger in the process . . . and then trying to keep it clean for the rest of the explore . . . doh!

Also have much unfinished business in cell 4 :)

Very much looking forward to the return visit! :)

I gotta say, Palisade, barbed wire, burried glass and hyperdermics have all challenged me but I have yet to be brutalised by the pesky manfrotto.... :). :jiggy:

Joking aside, seriously good work you guys, great report and pictures... Never get enough pye......

Superb shots Feisty worth the month long processing :) was a great day and cant believe why so many have trouble getting into cell 3 ;)

I know, I know - I've been super slow and I knew you'd give me grief for it . . . was in danger of having done trip number 2 before processing trip number 1! . . . and still have the St Johns set to do :)

I can't understand why people have such difficulties with cell 3 either . . . piece of cake

That carrier bag was a real find ;)

Poo... rubbish... hate you... :)

You know I don't mean it really, I just have a lot of trouble looking at Pyecrust pictures, especially good ones like these! ;)

Poo = Poostock . . . but not even going to go there as that is not a story for on here!

Didn't see any berries either on the route in or out or would have picked some for you
