End of an era.

Built in 1961, the chimney has dominated the Hartlepool skyline for over 50 years. Today the chimney was blown up as part of the ongoing development work on the site.

Below are a few pics i took in a 'going, going, gone' style. Unfortunatly my video camera didnt record it properly, so pics will have to suffice.

I had a look on youtube to see if there is any footage, and yes they're is if your interested.

Anyway whilst browsing I checked out some other demolition stuff. I found this D.I.Y attempt at demolishing a chimney pretty funny.

You have to click the link on the video back to youtube, it won't play on here.

What a tool that guy is lol :)

Yep - Steetley Magnesite is now nothing but piles of rubble. Wait, wasn't that already what it was?!

But no, all the settling tanks are gone and it is all just being levelled

That's a shame it was a very photogenic (and very dangerous) site. Any idea what they're doing with the pier?

The pier is currently inaccessible as they cut out a massive chunk to stop people going on it. With this in mind - i imagine that it will just be demolished too. I heard a rumour though that the pier actually belonged to the crown and they couldnt do anything with it. Not many people in Hartlepool wanted the chimney gone or the pier gone. We all liked the chimney as from whichever direction you came into hartlepool from you always knew you were home when you seen the chimney. And as Hartlepool has a big fishing industry, lots of the fishing community are upset at having a pier demolished that could be made perfectly safe.

Interesting photo showing what was there.

I was up at the power station last year and I remember that chimney!
A bit of a shame.
