So, I was going for a look at TG Greens when I drove past this place on the way quite by chance, stopped and spent three hours in awe of the towers, by which time it was too dark to carry on to Derby lol.

Pretty much all that remains of the site now is the cooling towers, the front two have now had the internals removed so you can get an idea of the immense scale standing in the middle looking up... the echo in there is also unlike anything I have ever heard!

History

Willington power station was built in the 1950′s next to the river Trent and close to the Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire coalfields, at the time thought in-exhaustible. Initial plans were to have two cooling towers and four generators – “Willington A”. During construction, “Willington B” was commissioned, with three more cooling towers and two generators.

Privatisation ensued, and National Power eventually decommissioned the station – A closing in 1995, and B following in 1999.

First things first, you have to get past security sheep in the adjacent field!

Thanks for looking....

Fantastic photos!
I suspect that these leviathans will soon go the way of many others and soon disappear in a few loud bangs and a huge cloud of dust.

Thanks all, you haven't lived until you have stood under one of these mothers and shouted ''Day o... day ay ay o''.... I think you could hear my echo on the Shetland Isles :D

When i last visited here i spent most of the time there shouting and chucking stones at the sides, some very very weird sound affects were made that afternoon

Some real impressive photography there!
I can only imagine what is going through that sheep's mind
