Willington cooling towers has been on my radar for a while. The 5 derelict towers dominate the landscape, and can be seen for miles around.

For those who haven’t been, nothing will prepare you for their colossal size. The original 2 towers have had all the internal stripped but the latter 3 still have the internals. The originals are a bit flooded underneath, but worth the trek into the centre for their epic views up to the top.

The history
The coal fired power station was built in the 1950s in two phases. The first 2 towers closed in 1995, and the last 3 closing in 1999. The buildings have been demolished, and only the cooling towers still stand. The site is earmarked for a residential development, or a new gas power station, depending on where you read.
