Clydebank Shipyard was one of the best known shipbuilders in the world.
building amongst others:
HMS Hood
RMS Queen Mary
RMS Queen Elizabeth
HMS Vanguard - the last battleship built in the world
HMY Britannia

Like much of the clydes shipbuilding industry the future started to look grim as the 90's approached but Clydebank pulled through with new contracts to build and maintain oilrigs. The yard finally closed in 2001 and what was one of the largest yards on the clyde has now been completely demolished apart from one of the two grade"A" listed Titan Cranes which is being converted into a viewing platform complete with dodgy stainless steel clad lift.

RM wearing the "I just wrote off my car & all ive got to show for it is this lousy crane" look!

At least there are some good pics now, I just don’t know how that flew under the radar, someone must have explored it before.

Ps. I think that’s the same expression I’d pull:lol:

Ouch on the car engine blowing up. not good, hope its sorted out now tho?

Like the pics, I agree, its a shame no one got any pics of the place just after it closed. that would have been a great report. Are the cranes the only things left then now? don't think id have the guts to even go up on the lift when its open. but love looking at the pics.

Thanks again.

The replacement, The "new" escort. It went up in smoke on the motorway... I wasnt very Impressed I'd only had it 3 weeks :( Lately I've had the worst luck with cars... There bleeding me dry.

Ick, sorry to hear that mate :(

Ahh sod ford, get your self something cheap and reliable from Japan:lol: my mates escort recently “brought the farm” as well, something about the engines computer (although how good the computer in a ’94 ford escort was in the first place I will never know:lol:)

Now that is one seriously heavy duty crane...............:):):):)
When you read post like that does anyone ever connect it to how daft we are becoming as a nation ?
Just this little piece about a closed down shipyard should make us all think about the nature and worth of those that 'govern' our nation ....What am I on about ?
Well...this is an island yes ? and we will always need to import a hefty amount of the 'materials' (food/oil/steel/coal/wood etc etc) needed to sustain life on this island yes? and yet we don't build ships anymore .....
Let me see now ....we use foreign ships to bring us foreign goods.
Uuuuummmmm ....hows that supposed to work then when the foreign folk that we are now completely in the hands of.... realise (as they must surely eventually do) that we have no alternative left but to buy our required 'goods' off them and then also to ask them to transport said 'goods' to us because we no longer have the capability of building any ships of our own.....Apply this train of thought to our general 'import' situation particularly in respect of the coal that we now buy from whoever will sell us some (and with the price of oil going through the roof make no mistake coal is just one of the 'goods' that are gonna become even more expensive) and we have got a recipe for a complete melt down...
I give it 10 years tops..... Happy little bugger ain't I ? hahahah!:)

Thats good to see my grandfarther worked in John Browns and later at Yarrow is a shame theres not much left of the yard, i remmeber seing some footage of it while it was delelict on a documentary a few years a go there were some remains of rotting submarines on one of the graving docks. all gone now i suppose.

Like th CWM jacket as well was proudly wearing mine this very weekend.
