Default Millhouses Engine Sheds/Jacobs Manufacturing, Sheffield, September 2015

Been posting a report a day for over a month to clear the Summer back catalogue but this is the last of them before the daily grind of work kicks in. This is my very local explore. I covered it in April 2013 but this place has only had one or two reports since as it gets overlooked in favour of the big Sheff draw-card sites. The thing that kicked me into action to go and have another look is that the land has no been sold and the new owners given the go-ahead to demo the place and build a care-home complex.

On one level the former engine shed building is impressive. On another level it is trashed and graffed to the max. Access is easy though and the graffiti was quite unique last time I went so it was time to give it another whirl.

There’s a little bit of history about the place. The Millhouses engine shed was built by the Midland Railway in 1901 to serve the Midland Main Line and to stable passenger and mixed-traffic locomotives for use on trains from the nearby Sheffield Midland station. Here's what it looked like in its hey-day:

The shed was built next to the former Millhouses railway station. It had 8 dead end roads and could handle about forty steam locomotives. Initially it was called Ecclesall shed but was renamed Millhouses in 1920. Millhouses bore the shed code 25A, then 19B in 1935 and finally 41C in 1958. In 1959 the shed had an allocation of thirty-three engines, including twelve Jubilee steam engines while 1960 saw the arrival of seven Royal Scots. With the decline of steam-power locomotives it closed in 1962 and was then converted into a warehouse. Before it closed it used to be owned by Jacobs Manufacturing. Its future proposed use can be seen here:

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
