Default Maenofferen Slate Quarry, Wales May 2017

As soon as this place came to my attention through a friend posting some photos a week or so before the trip I knew it would be right at the top of the list for the weekend. He warned me that to get to the buildings required some serious leg work and he wasn't wrong - to arrive at the closest buildings requires a calf-breaking, back-aching hike up the quarry which takes around 30-45 minutes depending on your pace and how many times you stop for a break. It's not one for the faint of heart but by the time we arrived at the old cutting sheds we realised it was totally worth it.

You'd think it'd be more easy going down but it's not, the severe gradient of the slopes really takes it out on your knees and calves just as badly as it does going up.

This place is wonderful and I need to get back there because there is a lot we didn't see, as time began running away from us and we had more stuff to see before the long drive home.

Never thought i'd see the day - Mookie does Maenofferen !!!
Mate this is my favorite location and im so glad that you've been bitten by the bug ! BUT - where's the rest ? 'Cos as much as you walked up you should've walked down !! Great pics mate.
BTW I never struggle once on that ascent - take it all in my stride and i'm virtually an OAP !! You must be seriously outta shape !!

    Very out of shape!

There is so much more I want to see here, we could have quite easily spent an entire day here but time sadly was against us considering we got there mid afternoon ha!

Second to last is a nice view of the main drumhouse with it's canted chimney.

Dinorwic will be upset if it sees that ;-)

Mookster, you do realise that Fluffy was within spitting distance when you were at Maenofferen?

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
