1. The History
The Five Weirs Walk is a 5miles/8km path from Sheffield City Centre to Meadowhall along the banks of a beautiful stretch the River Don. It connects to the Sheffield and Tinsley canal tow-path, the Upper Don Walk, the riverside path to Rotherham and the Trans Pennine Trail. The river has witnessed enormous change over the last centuries, taking it from rural landscapes to the heart of the steel industry and now providing a wonderful wildlife corridor through the modern city. Along the way it passes five weirs, plenty of industrial heritage and lots of wildlife. The route is almost entirely flat and follows surfaced paths for its entire length. There are no stiles, gates or livestock, but walkers need to negotiate a couple of flights of steps plus a few generous staggered barriers. For most of the length of the route you will be sharing the riverside path. The whole walk takes around two and a half hours at a moderate pace.

2. The ‘Explore’
So not so much the exploration of a single site but more a relaxed walk through Sheffield’s industrial heritage with a bit of dereliction and empty buildings along the way. So not your typical report but, despite that, thought it would make an interesting little report and something a bit different.

3. The Pictures

We start with the viaduct of Sheffield’s former second railway station, Sheffield Victoria. Here are the steps up to the now demolished train station:

The viaduct has some really fine sandstone crests:

The second derelict I came to was this old wharf-side building on the Don:

On closer inspection you can see a Phlegm!

Sadly no entry to this place or this former car showroom:

Next up, a bit of graff by the KLF front man and art-house protagonist Bill Drummond:

Here’s Peepcat!

And an old industrial building on Attercliffe Road:

Love this old carved stone from the former Salmon Pastures School:

You can spot the plaque of the school on this old picture of the school before it was demolished:

Unidentified factory end gable on the Don:

Further along the Don you can see two works by two of Sheffield’s premier graff artists:

This old railway bridge is still partially in use and has a single track rail to a former factory:

Cutting through to Attercliffe here’s the long empty former Adelphi Cinema:

Round the corner is The Traveller’s Inn, one of the many empty pubs in this part of Sheffield:

Across the road and along is this lovely former bank building, now standing vacant:

Along the towpath section of the walk there’s quite a few old buildings that back onto the canal:

Looping back round to where we started, here’s the empty former Tempered Spring company on Foley Street.

Finally an old gasometer on Sussex Street:

That's a nice report of parts of Sheffield in dereliction. Points of interest: The large street lamp above the disused railway. The nice crest for the Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway. The beautiful facade on the former Adelphi Cinema.

I read your title & not having much love for drainage stuff thought this would be a waste of 5 min of my life, but alas that was utterly brilliant!
Made a change to get a good mix of everything tbh

Sheffield may have been the 'Premier Steel City' before the modern day upstarts usurped it's throne; however, the City Fathers had no need to construct special street lighting standards to proclaim this fact - the 'off the shelf' cast iron furniture sufficed. The disused lighting tower once provided illumination in one of Sheffield's railway marshalling yards - it being to a standard BRB design. During the instigation of the UK's Clean Air Act and introduction of smokeless fuels, we used to climb these sodding things and place air sampling equipment on top of the Sheffield ones - my old department being one of the official Government testing organisations. Brilliant report Hughie and as Krela indicates, you will never get bored walking around the old inner city - but as you indicated, my favourite thing is the 'ribbon of nature' that one follows as you walk this path.

Love lookin around Sheffield esp by the Don, graff is first class, I wish they would leave some of them old industrial buildings or redev them rather than knock them down, neeps end will be all gone soon I guess.

Really enjoyed your little tour thanks for that HD:triumphant:
