I was in 2 minds if this was worth a post or not as its rather small, but u know what I love it!

I love it even more after todays visit which incidentally is why Im giving no location info...
We disturbed a barn owl on entry (this has happened more than once to me, with the last time my lad nearly getting hit in the face by one any of u guys experienced this? ) & 50 + owl pellets suggested this is a permanent roost!

Anyway on to the building, this is nestled in trees in the Northants countryside & Im pleased to say is completely untouched by graffiti etc.

But Im sorry to say I have no idea what this was! Obviously it was pumping water as its located near a stream, but there is no obvious properties that this was serving!
There is electric motors on the pumps that may be a later edition?

It feels Victorian! not easy to tell from the pics, but the floor is standard 6" checked quarry tiles & the walls are sandstone with lime green wash which Im sure in its day would of looked quite spectacular.
On with the pics, this was a combination of 2 visits over the last year, hope u enjoy!

I have experienced barn owls before, i woke one up by accident when i was exploring the old mock up bomb storage huts at RAF Newton, was really surprised how big they are in person!

Yeah the one last year at a really run down farmhouse nearly took my lads head off lol!
I went back a week later with my girlfriend, we just waited outside in the dusk & 3 of them came out, we lay on grass near the property for an hour or so & they "got used" to us. They were flying over & hovering barely 10ft above us seemingly checking us out & becoming ever more brave!
It was one of the most extraordinary experiences of my life!

Apparently they have facial recognition software like corvids - crows, jackdaws etc and if startled or threatened will go for your face. Its amazing when they just touch you with their wings as they go past though. There are quite a few of them around where I am just outside of Northampton.

Nice photos. One of those belts is hooked up and ready to go. My experience with a barn owl is a large whoosh inches above my head when I one walked into a large barn full of straw bales.

Didn’t realise u were local, will have to hook up sometime.
There dose seem an increasing number of barn owls these days!

Err no! Just a very highly developed brain that tells them to attack the highest point of the moving object, which will allow a swift flight away to safety, should the need arise. Wave your hands above your head or lie down and stick your feet in the air and it's the hands and feet that get the attention. As far as Crows are concerned, if the rest are like the four resident in our back yard, it is all down to shiny eyes of the prey. Our four friends will just as happily peck away at a scattering of small, shiny glass marbles on the table, as they will the the eyes in the rabbit head put there for food.

Have had a few generations of the same owl family on the family farm for years, fortunately the local environment can support their numbers and the old stone barn can be just left in peace. Obviously the parents/older birds are used to the human comings and goings on the ground well below them, but it is amazing how quickly each young brood settles down and accepts the human 'intrusion' below them. Always counted ourselves very lucky that we have been able to share their space for such a long time and such a joy when I go back to my 'roots'.

I can see why you like this little place, there's some good bits of machinery left to photograph.

Looks like a lot of folks have a Barn owl story to tell lol...so just to put in minor experience, very memorable it was too...it was in, oh bugga can't think of the name of the coal mine just tried to google it but nothing right came up, anyway it's got the two large Listed headstocks, Clipstone it just came to me haha...anyway I was on a ladder coming down from the floor above when something white silently swept past me freaking me out as it nearly touched me, huge it was, like 4ft atleast! I nearly feel off the ladder into a pile of rotten pigeons because it came outa nowhere then disappeared, the silence of its wings was eerie...in the proper sense of the word!

Thanks enjoyed your report:)
