Default Elton Mill Huntingdonshire - 2015-20

Talking to @downandbeyond the other day about this the other day so thought I would do a repost as its one of my favorite local explores & my first pics were quite frankly crap!

The original mill dates to 1700, with a later extension added on in 1840.

The mill is 3 storey + attic. The wheel is iron and wooden waterwheel aprox 14 feet diam and 12 feet wide & is still in place with water still flowing beneath,

The miller's house attached to the north-west was demolished in 1881.

Iv visited here countless times but a lot of these are from late last year when I had some particularly excellent light pouring in through the attic

Strangely in the rear lays a Bamford pump engine, which would be an easily restored enthusiasts piece

There is a lot of farm machinery laying in the end rooms, I heard from a local that there was originally plans to turn this into a museum which came to nothing.

    Thanks For Looking

Nice shots there. I liked picture 3 and 5 and just wondered how you were able to get a right balance of light and where your light meter was pointing at. The bright light at the end or the wood. A lot of vintage machinery and it could be turned into a museum.
When the going gets tough - the tough get going.

As the bright lights and bright lit areas appear well over exposed, it suggests that the exposure was based, and correctly so, on the interior structures. A well thought out and beautifully exposed set of images of this place. Usually the results do not do this place justice - these images do, well done BG! This is one of my favourite Mills, first seen (still in use) 60 years ago in my cycling days.

Thanks guys, dont rely on a light meter everything was set manually in live mode.
I was bracketing on most of these too so taking 3 different exposures but dont generally bother with that these days as u just end up with so many pics & u can get the same effect in LR.
Its easy enough to adjust light & dark areas in LR too

I tend to just set everything manual & adjust & retry if Im not happy with result, the beauty of exploring is that you normally have time to do a second shot
Heres one I took the other day, u dont get second chances with stuff like this so have to be confident with settings from the off!

About us
DerelictPlaces is a forum for people with an interest in the history and documentation of disused, derelict and abandoned buildings to come together and share their experiences, photography and historical findings. Our military, industrial and historical heritage is fast disappearing under the pressure of regeneration, the need for new housing, and often through simple neglect; Our aim is to document these places before they disappear entirely.
