Whilst mooching around the Cleveland Ironstone area I spotted a spoil heap and decided to have a look at the view from the top. On arrival it became apparent that a few buildings survived from the mine which operated from 1870 to 1963. I suspect that the engine house has been used for paintball activities.
See a spoil heap and must climb it,
Mine site ahoy.
694ft deep capped shaft just visible at the far left.
The engine house for an electric winder dates from c1916 although some sources suggest 1930s.
Tracks in the floor of the 1951 workshop for maintaining the underground electric locomotives.
Brick structure on the left is over the site of the upcast shaft and that on the right was associated with an electricity sub-station.
