An ironworks was established on the banks of the River Neath in the l840s. It was reconstructed in the l890s, still as an iron smelter and closed in l958. The site has been completely cleared with the exception of the blast engine house of c1910 which housed a Richardson, Westgarth quarter crank blowing engine. It is constructed of concrete blocks in a steel frame, and has two rows of classical-style windows, now filled in. Along one side and one end are pipe fittings where it used to pipe the air to the furnaces. Part of the old Briton Ferry Iron Works, all that is left now. The inside is stripped and someone has kept horses in there at one time.

It's a shame there isn't much left at the site.

Really nice pictures love them in B & W really does them justice!

It is right next to a gypsy camp so I think it is them that are keeping the horses there

Britton Ferry Ironworks.

Been there a few times, never got any info on the blowing engine though, thanks.
