Watnall Brickworks sits by the M1 motorway between Hucknall and Watnall in Nottinghamshire.

Watnall used spoil from the local mines, which was then crushed to a fine powder. This was then mixed with water, put into moulds and baked for about two weeks. This produced cinder blocks known as common bricks, which were used like breeze blocks of today, for the inner walls of buildings. The brickworks also supplied 'puddle' bricks to the East Midlands collieries.

Despite living not too far from here, i hadn't heard of this place! must take a look.

Have seen the chimney's when I've been driving up and down the M1, never taken the detour on my way home to have a good look though.

Its worth it for a half hour explore. We still haven't hooked up yet Kaputnik.

Why was there no planning for this?

I only went to the brick works once but always liked to see them as I drove down the M1. That the owner / developer has made Britain a blander place.

Glad i went to see these with 85vintage a few months back and get some pics after seeing Neosea's report.
like the cooling towers that were demo'd in sheffield, it'll be strange to pass the area without the familiar sight of these chimneys from now on.

funny how something like this happens then a for sale sign appears as.

I was passing there yesterday on the the M1 heading south there is a massive sign proclaiming 45 acre development site for sale

The for sale sign has been up for a while, but you are right, as soon as they appeared it was only a matter of time.

That's a shame there wasn't anything in the local news to let us know they were due to come down, :(

This bit of the newspaper report makes me laugh.

"David Russell, representing the landowner, an Australian in his 80s who does not want publicity, said: "We have been working very hard to keep people out. A lot of dog walkers feel like they have the right to roam.

"We spend time up here every week repairing fences.""

When me, Mendo and Fairy visited the site a few months ago, there weren't any fences around the place, and we walked up a public footpath/bridleway onto the site. No warning signs, and no fences, so what he's saying is rubbish!

Yes that made me laugh too. And if someone were to steal bricks from the chimneys themselves then they wouldn't have had to blow them up, just dig out the thieves from the rubble. Proves you can't believe what you read.
